Description
Two Chinese painted pottery stick men standing with elongated bodies, legs. Each slender figure modelled standing with detailed naturalistic expressions, with cold painted pigments with the original red, black, white and pink colours.
Age: Chinese, Han Dynasty, B.C. 200 - A.D. 200
Measurement on stand: Height 68 C.M. / Width 13 C.M.
Generally these figures have no arms* which were lost/decayed over time however these two pieces featured in an exhibition which saw a restorer recreate the missing arms so that they pieces could be seen as originally envisioned. These ‘restored’wooden arms can be removed according to a purchasers preference, then slot into the cast ‘arm holes’ on the two figures.
Condition: Well-preserved old burial condition overall with some amount of soil adhering (some abrasions and wearing on the piece due to the long burial time underground. Please note it appears that both figures have had repairs to one foot (which may have become detached during the burial time). Please see pictures.

Similar figures can be found in tombs from the Han dynasty in particular the Yangling Mausoleum in Shaanxi Province, north of Xian, home of ‘terracotta army’
* Originally these figures were dressed with clothes and with the elapse of time, their dresses became rotten, they were left dress less, and became naked. Originally they had wooden arms which were fitted on the sockets of the shoulders, and were moveable, now the wooden arms are reduced to ashes because of erosion, and they are missing. The whole surfaces of the figurines were painted with colours. These kinds of figures were only found around the capital, and were used by the royal family and forbidden to ordinary people.

condition
Good, commensurate with age and their journey through time. Figures heads, torso and upper lets robust and intact, however both figures how had a repair to the lower leg, an old repair.
