Description
This is a very nice, wearable piece of Celtic jewellery from the early 1950's. The bracelet consists of six round shield type patterns featuring a cross 'Alisee' that has a central boss and Celtic knot patterns to each of the arms. Each of the these shields is linked together by an elongated single silver link. Each of the panels is marked to the reverse with the word 'silver' plus the conjoined JH mark for John Hart - five of the six panels is also stamped with the word 'IONA' - John Hart's earlier work doesn't appear to carry full U.K. hallmarks like his later pieces from the late 50's and early 60's so the marks exhibited on this piece are perfectly normal. The bracelet is completed by a retaining loop and spring clasp to fix it in place. John Hart was a Scottish Jeweller working in the traditional Iona style from the mid 1940's. Four years after Alexander Ritchie's passing in 1941 a new enterprise called Celtic Art Industries was founded by Hamish Dawson-Bowman which wanted to continue producing jewellery in the distinctive Iona manner. C.A.I was the work of 3 craftsmen; Iain MacCormick, Malachy Gormley and John Hart - some time in the very early 1950's, Hart left C.A.I to work on his own. It's known that John Hart was heavily influenced by the architecture of the Island of Iona and indeed by Ritchie's own silver work - it's not known to me whether this particular bracelet is based on a Ritchie design or is original to Hart, but nevertheless it is very beautiful in its form.
