This is a really good and somewhat scarce set of sterling silver Iona style coffee / demitasse spoons - they are scarce because you seldom see a set of 6 and also because of the maker, which appears to be Charles Horner - although Horner is known to have made some silver spoons he is naturally better known for his jewellery, thimbles and hatpins. Each spoon carries identical marks and has the hallmarks for Birmingham 1956 - each spoon is also marked with an incuse CH mark - I've researched this mark as much as I can and there seems to be no viable alternative as to who else it could be - the incuse CH mark is not one that I'm familiar with but that doesn't mean it wasn't used on these later pieces - The last image in the set of pictures provided shows a number of known Charles Horner marks and the one stamped onto the these spoons is shown in that list - I've also seen mid 20th century silver Celtic jewellery with exactly the same mark and these were also catalogued as Charles Horner - naturally if someone has information that contradicts this attribution I'll be happy to listen! Each spoon is designed and crafted in a traditional Celtic Iona style and uses Celtic knot patterns at each end of the stem - to the terminal is Viking long, a motif that was a favourite of the famous Iona silversmith, Alexander Ritchie. Ritchie's designs were numerous and it's entirely possible this is an exact copy of one of his designs from the 1920's or 30's - Ritchie also outworked his pieces to other jewellers and silversmiths in Scotland, Chester and Birmingham and many were known to have carried on producing the designs after Ritchie's death in 1941. There was somewhat of Celtic revival in the 1950's and there are many good examples of jewellery to be found from this era. The 6 spoons are house in their original black leatherette case - the underside of the case has an original label still in place (see picture 4) - there is also evidence that there has been another label stuck to the velvet lining of the case where the spoons sit (see main picture) - I'd imagine this would of simply said 'Sterling Silver' or similar.
Century Antiques has clarified that the Vintage Silver Celtic Iona Style Coffee Spoons Charles Horner 1956 - Scarce! (LA94591) is genuinely of the period declared with the date/period of manufacture being 1956
The condition of each spoon is good with no issues to report - there are some minor signs of normal wear but nothing you'd consider unusual for an item that is 62 years old - the case shows a couple of external scuffs and grubbiness but is structurally sound and has worked well to protect its contents.
