Hester Bateman - Silversmith

Hester Bateman is considered one of the most notable female Silversmiths of the 18th Century. In 1732 she married a goldsmith named John Bateman, but when he died suddenly in 1770 of tuberculosis she chose to take over his work but turning to silver instead. Together with her children she incorporated the latest technology and thin gauge silver to produce a wide range of very competitively priced pieces. Often pierced and engraved, her tableware was in the Neoclassical style popular at the time.

When Hester finally retired in 1790 the Silversmithing was carried on by her children. At LoveAntiques.com we have a good range of genuine silverware from Hester Bateman and her family all being offered by trusted and knowledgeable sellers.
