Full set of first world war post cards depicting a studio impressions of the destruction of a Zeppelin. Printed on each card beneath each ‘impression’ is ‘Officially sanctioned by Press Bureau’ (left corner), ‘ THE DESTRUCTION OF A ZEPPELIN IN SIX STAGES’ (centre), ‘THE I.V STUDIOS’ (right corner) and each is numbered 1-6 and a few words re’ the stage of events , e.g ‘ 2. Well under Gun Fire’. All cards are free of any writing to the backs, all are in very good condition. Research would suggest that the ‘Zeppelin’ was the Schutte-Lanz SL11 that was shot down over Cuffley in Hertfordshire England by Willam Leefe Robinson V.C. on the 3rd September 1916 following a bombing raid by the airship over St Albans. His actions were rewarded with the Victoria Cross Medal, the highest award for military action However, the airship was strictly speaking not a Zeppelin and it is suggested that the authorities classed the airship as a Zeppelin for propaganda purposes as the ‘baby bomber’ was the first to be shot down over the UK. The information was allowed to stand uncorrected for a few decades.
