Description

Hand coloured copper engraving, dated circa 1750, by Emanuel Bowen. From the Large English Atlas. Very detailed, substantial areas of text relating to the commerce and agriculture of the county. He had plans for completing a major county atlas but, finding the task beyond him, joined with Thomas Kitchin to publish 'The Large English County Atlas'. Many of the maps were individually issued from 1749 and the whole atlas was finally completed in 1760. Bowen engraved maps from 1714, becoming one of the most prolific and important map producers of the eighteenth century and 'Engraver of Maps' to George II and Louis XV. The dominant feature of each map is the finely engraved, rococo title cartouche which was designed to educate by depicting crafts and products associated with the county.
