This is a superb Meiji period Japanese shibayama plaque with fabulous lacquer work to the panel. The plaque features a pair of scholarly sages in period dress expertly crafted in carved and polished bone and caramel coloured horn pieces. The laquerwork is first class particularly to the garments of the sage and the finely detailed hand gilded blossoming trees in the background. The plaque is in super condition and has a wonderful patina.
