This is a really unusual item and very very rarely found in fully hallmarked solid 9ct gold. These tiny mirrors have always been very collectable. this example has 'dimpled' golf ball style patterning throughout apart for a raised slightly dome shaped plain suraced oval cartouche to centre, (this cartouche area could be inscribed thereon).
On the top back are the full hallmarks for Birmingham 1909. the mirror is set in a gold mount and set into the mirror body. there's a gold top holding ring with an inner diameter of 3.6 mm.
The purpose of these tiny mirrors was as a portable discreet makeup check for the 'about town' lady of means. they could be worn on a chatelaine, kept in a purse or sometimes on a guard chain and tucked in a sleeve, hence the word 'muff'.
HALLMARKS ARE Anchor for Birmingham assay office, 9.375 to confirm 9CT gold standard and lowercase date letter 'k' for 1909. Maker the renown 'A BROS'
This little item is very rare and made even more so by the fact it is in excellent condition. There are no bumps dints, scratches or blemishes on the gold surfaces at all, all well polished too. The glass mirror is not chipped or damaged apart for some slight markings to the glass surface, it remains still in excellent 'reflecting' order.
I am sure this is for you! a marvelous item from this fascinating time in history (from those edwardian halcyon days for many! howards end etc).
A RARE COLLECTORS ITEM THAT IS VERY WEARABLE ON A NECK CHAIN AND USEFUL TOO!
THE PERFECT GIFT FOR SOMEONE WHO LIKES SOMETHING REALLY SPECIAL!
