Description

The brooch has been manufactured from unmarked sterling silver with collet set carnelian stone cabochon to the centre - the stone setting has a very fine milled edge to it. The central stone is surrounded by delicate 3 lobed leaves and berry motifs which are common decorative features of Arts & Crafts jewellery.

To the reverse of the brooch is a simple tube hinge, pin and C clasp mechanism, which is absolutely correct for the era. What's very curious about the clasp is the fact it is made from rose gold of around 9ct, which I'm told is feature often seen on Liberty & Co silver jewellery from this era.

I can't be 100% sure on the practical reasons behind the use of a gold pin - it's been suggested that because gold doesn't tarnish the same way that silver does, it is more suitable for use on finer fabrics where any oxidisation might spoil the fabric - another suggestion is that it is simply pure decadence on the part of the jeweller who made it!

It's interesting to mention that at the time of me listing this piece there is a virtually identical brooch for sale on Etsy, but that example has a blister pearl stone - that example also has a gold pin to the reverse and is also completely unmarked, like my example, which goes to show that at least the jeweller was consistent in terms of how they made their pieces.

People who collect or buy and sell jewellery from this era will know that there are many, many pieces of good quality pieces that carry no marks whatsoever that indicate the precious metals used.

Even some of the top makers didn't always mark their items and in those cases you have to look at the design style used and the way it has been constructed. The delicate leaves and berry design is a feature seen on many designers works, from Liberty & Co, the Guild of Handicraft and the Artificers Guild through to the slightly later works of Bernard Instone and more.

The brooch measures 3.5cm across and is 1.2cm from top to bottom - the total unpacked weight is 3.2g
