Description

This is really nice piece of provincial sterling silver Scottish jewellery that has been made in the popular Celtic style.

The piece is fully marked to the reverse with full U.K. hallmarks for Edinburgh 1937 - the piece is marked 'M & C' for the makers, Medlock & Craik - it is also stamped INVSS, for Inverness.
Although assayed in Edinburgh, this piece is classed as provincial silver on account of the location of the silversmiths - they would of submitted their work to the Edinburgh assay office for hallmarking as there wasn't one in Inverness.

Medlock & Craik were in business from circa 1916 - 1960's - they seemed to have specialised in this traditional Celtic style of silver and jewellery.

This piece of jewellery could have a number of uses, it would work as a kilt pin, a shawl pin, a regular brooch or even a tie pin. I actually sold a similar one in November last year that was to be used as a kilt pin on traditional Highland dress.

The pin or brooch consists of a Celtic knot stem with a Clan crest style lion rampant motif to the top - the lion is holding a cross pattee within its paws. The lion motif is probably just meant to be a generic Scottish motif (with the lion being the symbol of Scotland) - it could however be more specific to a Scottish clan or family, though more research would be needed to verify this. The one I sold last year had the same stem to it but the top was a stag, which again is a popular motif in Scotland.

To the reverse is a simple tube hinge and C clasp mechanism, which is perfectly correct for the era.

The pin / brooch measures 8cm in length and is 2cm across at its widest point - the total unpacked weight is 7.9.

Declaration

Century Antiques has clarified that the Vintage Provincial Inverness Silver Celtic Style Kilt Pin / Shawl Pin - Medlock & Craik - Edinburgh 1937 (CA2078 / LA154180) is genuinely of the period declared with the date/period of manufacture being 1937.

Condition

The condition of the item is excellent with no issues to report - there are no splits, nicks or other kinds of damage to speak of - the pin and clasp to the rear also work perfectly. The silver has a really nice patina, built up through years of wear, handling and cleaning - the silver has tarnished in amongst the knot work design which really makes it stand out - silver dipping the item would get rid of this if desired, but I never do as I think it would spoil the look somewhat.
