Vintage 1950s Sterling Silver & Chrysoprase Brooch - Bernard Instone
Ref: CA2028 / LA90599
This is beautifully designed brooch that looks like an early 20th century piece - it is in fact more likely to be from the 1950's and is certainly a Bernard Instone design.
The style is very typically Arts & Crafts brooch with cast silver flower and foliage motifs set within a diamond shaped frame and it has a single semi-precious oval green Chrysoprase cabochon to the centre - to the reverse is a hinged pin and rollover safety clasp.
There are many example of Instone's work to be found online with identical motifs and construction styles - Instone actually passed away in 1987 some 30 years after this piece was made - the use of silver and semi-precious stones is absolutely typical of his style and work and the arts & crafts jewellery style in general - Chrysoprase and Chalcedony were the two most frequently semi precious stones used in his work.
The back of the frame of the piece is simply marked 'silver' - I've seen attributed Instone pieces marked in this way or just marked 'sterling silver' or with his 'BI' mark, some items (though more unusually) carry full UK Birmingham hallmarks but these tend to be much later in the 20th century and made by S&Co which I'm told was a company associated with his son.
Naturally, a piece made by Instone and carrying his B.I mark would command a significantly higher premium, some of his works are into the high hundreds of pounds and a few are into the thousands of pounds , I'm pleased to say this example is a lot more affordable.
The examples of his work marked only 'silver' or 'sterling silver' will date from the mid 20th century.
The brooch measures 4cm across x 2cm top to bottom and its unpacked weight is 7.4g.
Century Antiques has clarified that the vintage sterling silver & chrysoprase brooch - Bernard Instone (CA2028 / LA90599) is genuinely of the period declared with the date/period of manufacture being 1950s.
The condition all round is excellent with no faults or damage to report - the hinge and clasp work exactly as they they - the silver has a nice patina and the reverse of the design has blackened with age (you could use silver dip to clean this if you prefer a brighter finish) - all round a beautiful and very wearable piece!
