Description

I think this is one of the nicest hand made pendants I've seen in a while now, and certainly an unusual stone setting!

The style of the item is very firmly in the Art Nouveau and Arts & Crafts manner as there are elements of both art movements visible within the piece.

The item carries full U.K. hallmarks for Birmingham 1909 and has the silversmiths mark for Payton, Pepper & Sons Ltd of Vyse Street, Birmingham.

To the centre of the pendant is a milgrain set, oval simulated black opal stone that has been formed from flecks of coloured metal foils with a glass covering. Surrounding this are highly stylised oxidised silver heart shaped leaves and planished and studded bands of silver.

The main part of the pendant is suspended on 3 bands of silver which also have a deliberate and stylised 'kink' put into them to add to the organic feel of the item (see pictures 3, 4, 5 and 10). To the top of the pendant is an inverted heart motif which simply has a hole punched through the metal to allow for a suspension ring.

The pendant comes complete with a sterling silver medium fine 18 inch vintage chain - this easily slips through the top suspension ring, so should its new owner desire a longer or thicker chain this can be easily be achieved (the clasp of the chain is marked 'Sterling').

The whole piece has been executed in what I'd describe as 'high art nouveau' where the piece is highly stylised and screams high fashion from the early 20th century.

I'm really not sure whether the silversmiths used their own original design for this item or they've used another designer's - this happened more often than you'd imagine in this era, with even Liberty & Co / Archibald Knox designs being sympathetically copied by different silversmith.

There are certainly elements to the piece that takes inspiration from the top designers of the period - the so called 'Liberty Style' / Archibald Knox, the C.F.A. Voysey style heart motifs and the raised stud work look of the Guild of Handicraft.
Payton, Pepper & Sons were actually based on the same street in Birmingham's jewellery quarter (Vyse Street) as Liberty's silversmith, William Hair Haseler who famously made their Cymric silver, Tudric pewter and Knox's elaborate jewellery designs - you can imagine that every craftsman based in the area was carefully taking note of what the other was doing in order to ahead of the game and more importantly, their competitors!

The pendant measures 4.2cm top to bottom and is 2.7cm across - the silver chain is 18 inches in length - the total unpacked weight is 6.6g.

Declaration

Century Antiques has clarified that the Antique Art Nouveau / Arts & Crafts Silver & Faux Opal Pendant with Chain - 1909 - Payton, Pepper & Sons (CA2059 / LA137009) is genuinely of the period declared with the date/period of manufacture being 1909.

Condition

The condition of the item all round is excellent with no issues to report - there are some extremely minor contact marks to the stone commensurate with age and use, but you can only see these under magnification. The silver work is all in good order and has a lovely oxidised finish to it - naturally it's entirely the choice of its next owner how they clean it as it could be made to look bright and shiny - personally, I would leave it oxidised it is as it is in keeping with ethos of the movement and it just looks altogether more antique and of its time.
