Description

A superb Victorian sterling silver and rose gold clamper / cuff bracelet, fully hallmarked for 1883.

This bracelet is a beautiful example of later 1880s jewellery, with finely detailed rose gold ivy leaves and stem overlaid onto engraved silver leaves. The gold stands proud of the silver, creating a three dimensional surface that really catches the eye.

It is hallmarked inside for Birmingham 1883 and with the makers mark for the Sydenham Brothers. Based in in Tenby Street, Birmingham, Sydenham Brothers were a very successful workshop, created when George and Robert Sydenham formed a partnership with Claude Tebbitt. This partnership ended in 1875 however the firm continued as a prominent jewellers, with an advertisement in 1913 describing the firm as, by then, manufacturers of diamond and gem-set jewellery. It ceased trading in 1930.

Condition: Excellent, this bracelet looks largely unworn. There are no noticeable dents to, or miss-shaping of the silver which also shows little surface wear. It is fully oxidised through having been unworn for a length of time, and I have not cleaned it back to shiny as the darker surface shows the gold well. I have only given it a very light polish to bring up the gold and the detail of the engraving but not removed the overall oxidisation (see photos). The clasp shuts firmly and holds securely.

Size: to fit wrist of 6 1/2" circumference or less, width 3/4" or 20mm.
