Inlaid walnut jewellery box in fine condition. The box differs from most similar boxes of the period insofar that the lid is curved to ALL sides rather than just to the back and front. Though not rare, they were made in far less numbers and more often than not there are fractures to the veneer where the corners meet……Not the case with this example. In addition, this box features nicely grain veneer to ALL aspects of the exterior rather than merely the top and front as is quite frequently the case on lesser quality boxes. The condition of the veneer is extremely good as are the Tunbridge Ware style inlaid bands and the Mother of Pearl hexagonal cartouche and escutcheon. Very small blemish to the veneer to the left of the escutcheon, a minor defect given the age of the box and the overall condition. Lid closes square. Hinges and lock in good condition with a working key supplied. Original tray complete with all dividers and lids etc. There are signs of use and the lid interior, storage section beneath the tray and the coverings to the fittings within the tray have been relined/covered by a previous owner.
Originally made as a sewing – work box these boxes are nearly always used as jewellery boxes nowadays, the various sections being ideal for the purpose and the quality generally being superior to most modern produced jewellery boxes.
