Nice quality mid 1800’s rosewood vanity – jewellery box in fine condition. Unspoilt patina. Attractive grain. Twin inlaid brass bands to the top and front with ornate brass cartouche. No missing or replaced veneer or inlays. Subtle rounded edges. Sprung side drawer accessed by removing the original brass locking rod located to the box interior. The drawer interior features the original lining in superb condition. Hinges in very good condition. Key shown is for decorative purposes only. Opens to reveal an impressive interior. Original leather panel to the lid interior with intricate gilt and blind embossed borders in excellent condition. One small tear to the leather at the top right corner but as can be seen from the photographs it does not detract to any great degree. Swing clasp to the top that when released allows the panel to fold forward to give access to a ‘love letter’ envelope. Both side folds and the interior lining are in splendid condition suggesting little to no use over the past 150++ years. The box has the bonus of still having the removable original rosewood veneered framed mirror that sits within a rosewood veneered recess. The mirror has a hairline crack at one corner and does have some age spotting but the slight ‘wave’ of the reflection does add charm to the item. It could of course be easily replaced but it would be a pity to do so as most boxes of the style and period are void of the original mirror. The base section comprises of various storage sections. The three lidded sections still have the remains of the original foil lining and all the lids are original, made of solid rosewood with the original finely turned knobs and foil to the undersides. Original centre section with gilt and blind embossed leather lid to complement the panel to the lid interior. All hoops that retain the replacement accessories are in very good condition. Again, remains of the original foil lining in the storage section. The 5 jars are I believe original. All glass is in excellent condition with some degree of wear through of the silver plated lids and minor dents to the two small lids. The tray is of solid mahogany construction. Additional storage beneath the tray in very clean condition with the original natural mahogany finish. A fine looking box that displays well and with good storage areas for items of jewellery.
