Fine quality inlaid rosewood jewellery – work box in superb condition. Made during the early-mid Victorian period. No missing or replaced veneer. Extensive, intricate Mother of Pearl inlays, all original, all complete and in outstanding condition. Top closes perfectly square. The hinges and lock are worthy of attention insofar that rather than being the standard brass they are silver plated, more often than not only featured on fine quality boxes aimed at the higher end of the market. A replacement working key is supplied though it is a tad fiddly and if security is an important requirement it would be best to have a replacement cut. The quality, condition and degree of original features of the interior in common with the box exterior would suggest that this box has had very little use by the many generations of previous owners. The silk panel to the lid is in marvellous condition and folds forward to provide access to a storage envelope that again is made in a manner that indicates quality. The side folds are FAR more robust than the more common paper or light material usually employed and given that the envelope looks to be unused it should be good for many years of use. The tray comprises of 20 sections of various sizes, all with the original lids etc. All dividers, material, lining, pull tabs are in excellent condition. Large storage section beneath the tray, again in very clean condition with the original lining. The majority of antique sewing/work boxes are nowadays put to good use to serve as jewellery boxes. The small sections in the tray and the large storage section beneath making them ideal for the purpose. Let’s face it…..not many modern produced boxes can compare to the likes of this box and FAR fewer can represent a better investment. Unusual to come across boxes of the age and style in such condition. Must recommend.Unpacked weight 1.8Kg
