Gentleman's, absolutely outstanding Elgin (USA) Antique pocket watch with beautiful ivory porcelain dial and a 10 carat (stamped) rose gold filled (has a lovely warm pink hue to it and is what is known in the UK as rolled gold) original Dennison case.
Looks to have been much loved and very well cared for - her condition certainly reflects this.
Full working order and is an excellent timekeeper (within +2/-2 minutes per 24 hours) with plenty of room on the regulator (which is sat correctly in the central position) for any further fine tuning
Fully checked and serviced by my highly experienced watchmaker and is guaranteed to be 100% authentic - a timepiece to grace any collection!
Impressive and distinctive, high gloss, 'snowflake' white porcelain dial in mint condition - absolutely no hairlines, marks or nibbles.
Signed clearly in bold, black fancy script; ELGIN
Bold black Roman numerals with black minute markers, bolder black five minute markers and larger diamond shaped 15 minute markers to chapter ring.
Finely cut, original bright blued steel spade and whip hands and original blued steel arrow tip seconds hand all in lovely straight, unmarked order.
Original thick bevel edge glass (not acrylic) in clear and bright condition with very few, extremely tiny (micro) surface scratches showing under eyeglass only commensurate with age.
The highly polished (5cm diameter / 7.1cm from top of bow to base), 10 carat (stamped) rose gold filled original Dennison case is heavy (has a pleasing solid feel in the hand and total watch weight is a heavy 105.1 grams), robust and in wonderful condition - absolutely no indentations or wear (again looks to have been very well cared for) and just a few very light little surface scratches (showing under eyeglass only) commensurate with age and use in her 99 years service.
The front bezel is hinged at 6 (they are more commonly a snap fit), opens correctly to exactly 90 degrees, closing tightly with a very reassuring click.
The back cover and dust cover are again hinged at 6, both open to exactly 90 degrees, closing tightly and all three large hinges are true and firm with absolutely no play.
Clearly stamped inside the back cover (which has two very light little surface scratches - looks like someone once tested it to see if solid gold); MOON TRADE MARK (the 'Moon' cases where always 10ct gold filled), A.L.D. DENNISON WATCH CASE Co LTD (Aaron Lufkin Dennison - one of the founding Fathers of the American Waltham Watch Company who moved to England to establish the Dennison factory - they made cases for all the leading watch manufacturers of the era including Rolex and Omega) and is stamped to centre with their trade symbols of a star, crescent moon and sun.
Clearly numbered; 672862.
This numbered is correctly, partially repeated to the inside back case cuvette and underside of the bezel lip; 2862.
The dust cover is clearly stamped to the inside; ENGLISH MAKE GUARANTEED TO BE MADE OF TWO PLATES OF 10CT GOLD WITH PLATE OF COMPOSITION BETWEEN AND TO WEAR 20 YEARS (again the 20 year Dennison cases where always 10ct gold filled).
Numbered again; 672862 21 - the 21 is the Dennison date numbering system; 1921 which shows the movement is original to the case, they should be no more than 10 years apart and the movement will always be dated earlier or the same, never after.
Also carries the service mark from my watch maker but interestingly has no others - I suspect this watch has only had one owner who used it infrequently.
The Elgin 7 jewel (Grade 293), fire gilt 3/4 plate lever movement is in superb bright and clean order and has just been fully serviced.
Has a compensated balance (did not want to stop for the camera showing the balance spring is in perfect beat) with red gold balance screws and two yellow gold meantime screws (for precision timing), bright steel overcoil balance spring which is 'breathing' well and has the correct Elgin v in the top coil, beautiful 'swirl' engine turning to the mainspring and ratchet barrel covers, heavily engraved balance cock, micro whip regulator (which mentioned earlier is sat correctly in the central position) and original, matching domed steel case screws.
Stamped to the top plates in very fancy arched script; ELGIN NAT'L WATCH CO. U.S.A. 7 JEWELS and is numbered; 23669324 daing her to 1920.
This number is correctly repeated to the bottom plate (under the dial).
Hand set operates smoothly and correctly - the pull up/push down action is very firm and true.
Lovely totally un-worn rose gold filled large 'onion' crown.
Original totally un-worn rose gold filled Dennison safety bow which is correctly stamped to one side; DQ - Dennison Quality.
A very handsome and highly impressive Gentleman's American Elgin Antique timepiece which was much loved and very well cared for - she will make a perfect gift and a heirloom to be enjoyed by your future generations!
