This exquisite cast iron lantern is adorned with vibrant multicolored chunks of glass that glisten when it's lit. Enjoy the captivating artistic effect that this stunning lantern makes in your home, bringing an elegance and sophistication to delight your senses. Cast iron lanterns with chunks of glass, often referred to as "chunk glass lanterns" or "slag glass lanterns," have a history that dates back to the late 19th century. These lanterns became popular during the Victorian era, particularly in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The technique of using slag glass, which is a type of colored glass with streaks or swirls of different hues, was developed in the late 19th century. Slag glass was created by adding metallic oxides to the molten glass, resulting in the characteristic marbled appearance. The use of chunk glass in lanterns provided an attractive and colorful illumination when the light passed through the glass panels. The latter is what we think this lantern is and possible dates to the late 19th century or in to the early 20th century. Cast iron was a favored material for lantern frames due to its durability and decorative possibilities. The combination of cast iron frames and chunk glass panels resulted in ornate and visually striking lantern designs. These lanterns were commonly used for both indoor and outdoor lighting purposes, such as street lighting, home décor, and garden illumination. This particular example made of cast iron is full of character and the chunks of glass are held in place with a lead frame work. Original and as found, cast iron is solid, lots of flaky sections, heavy, all chunks of glass are in place. Needs a chain, requires wiring, wiring will depend on where you will p[position it, open to the elements or under a porch.
