Description
We present for consideration, this lovely fusee wall timepiece with 12” dial, by maker Jabez Kemp of Wolverhampton. Born 1852, Kemp was a distinguished young watch and clockmaker and silversmith, operating from 22 Queens Square, in Wolverhampton’s city centre, moving ostensibly into jewellery retail c1876. By 1878, Kemp had partnered in business with goldsmith, Edward Wilcox, becoming known as “Kemp and Wilcox, Jewellers, and Goldsmiths” and between them, became a notable prestige outlet for high-quality related goods, specialising in jewellery, clocks, and watches. Indeed, as recorded in the ‘Wolverhampton Business Review’ of 1879; “…their business at 22 Queen Square, is certainly one of the most reliable and popular of its character in Wolverhampton…The shop is spacious, elegantly fitted up, and has a large plate glass show window, of which every advantage is taken to make an effective display.” This clocks solid Oak turned roundhead face, sits over its boxed cabinet with lovely, aged patination. There are 2 hinged inspection doors located on each side of the box and an operable lockable regulator door located at the bottom of the box. The clock retains its original metal dial and paintwork, with black Roman numerals and Kemp’s details, finished with its original pair of blued Spade hands, secured with a pinned collet. The clocks dial is then protected by a thick glaze mounted in a brass bezel. The clock benefits from a quality 8-day single fusee driven movement set between shouldered plates and turned pillars and comes with its original 72mm diameter brass pendulum bob and fusee brass winding key. …A fine early Victorian English fusee dial timepiece of high-quality and good proportion, from one of Wolverhampton’s best known and celebrated clockmakers, who passed away c1913 when only around 61 years old.
