Description
A 16th century iron bound Franco German marriage chest of heavy oak construction with two carved romayne panels, depicting husband and wife and a cartouche insignia centred beneath the lockplate. The tips of the wrought iron straps decorated with fleur de lis and the straps on the lid with upside down love hearts. The sides of the chest have large iron rope twist carrying handles, each with a heavy duty strap brace behind.
Although the lock and plate is early, it is evident that there was once a much larger lock and plate before. It is entirely possible that the chest was once broken into and the lock and plate was replaced.
The chest is well very well made with dovetailed corners and square pegged bottom boards.
Overall the chest is excellent condition and has fantastic colour and patination.
Provenance - From the collection of William Giendt.
