Description
This glorious tall 17th century oak pot cupboard with open under tier has a unique look and a good value, versatile storage areas. Stacking pots or earthen ware on the open planked shelf would look stunning, four sturdy legs with stop chamfer edge detail, box aprons on each side supporting the paneled to box above. The top paneled box is particular nice and has a charming solid hinged oak door, beaded edges, picture bead inner frame on a flat panel. The top sits loose on the frame, within a beaded recess to hold it tight and secure. Amazingly they have the original hand forged catch lock and hinges. The lock is is still operational and each hinge is held on with the original nail pins. The hinges are so individual, each hinges is a different size and you can see how they have been cut in to the door. Quite remarkable to see the hinges still in operation. One very thick cross sawn shelf which is removable. All the corners on the box have a wonderful patina to the oak and rounded. You will see the two front frames have some ancient repairs which have been cut in very well and noticeable by the varying oak colours. I don't think this detracts from the over piece, just adds a little more history to what is a very old cupboard.
