Description
A superb and highly decorative antique 18th Century Dutch Delft blue and white pottery jug/pitcher, complete with its wonderful hinged pewter-mounted cover. This substantial period piece stands approximately 25.9 cm tall and is beautifully hand-painted throughout in the characteristic cobalt-blue palette associated with Dutch Delftware. The bulbous body is particularly attractive, decorated with a continuous Dutch pastoral waterside landscape, incorporating sailing vessels upon a lake or river, distant buildings, trees and vegetation, together with an elegantly dressed courting couple seated beside the water. The upper section is richly embellished with numerous bands of hand-painted floral, foliate, scroll and geometric decoration, while the original ceramic cover is similarly painted with a charming waterside landscape and sailing boats. It is of particular interest is the substantial pewter hinge and thumbpiece, which secures the ceramic cover and gives the piece enormous period character. The underside bears a hand-painted capital letter “A” mark. Attributes: Date: 18th century Origin: Netherlands / Dutch Material: Tin-glazed earthenware with pewter mounts Decoration: Hand-painted underglaze blue Mark: Painted capital “A” on the underside Condition: Considering that this wonderful piece dates from the 18th century and is approximately 250 years old, it has survived remarkably well. As clearly illustrated in our photographs, there are various age-related imperfections, including minor glaze losses, fritting/chipping and general wear commensurate with considerable age. Importantly, the handle has suffered historic damage and has been repaired using an old museum-style conservation repair, incorporating metal reinforcement/stapling to stabilise the original ceramic. This is an early and wonderfully evocative repair which we have deliberately left entirely untouched. Rather than attempting to disguise the jug's history with modern restoration, the repair forms an interesting part of the object's long life and demonstrates the considerable effort once taken to preserve valued pieces of Delftware. There is also evidence of historic repair/stabilisation around the handle attachment, all of which is clearly shown within the accompanying close-up photographs. The hinged cover remains present and operational. ^^ Fast & Free UK Delivery Included^^ *A Certificate of Authenticity (COA) will be provided by artsonline with this piece* Delivery Artsonline UK ships worldwide daily, using only fully insured, priority, and fully tracked delivery services.
