Description
Gentleman's Swiss 'Criterion' high grade 15 jewel (3 adjustments) Antique pocket watch with beautiful ivory porcelain dial in a 9ct (professionally tested) gold filled (known in the UK as rolled gold) original Dennison satin finish case.
Looks to have been much loved - her condition certainly reflects this.
Full working order (with the regulator sat correctly in the central position) and has been fully checked, serviced, new mainspring fitted by my highly experienced watchmaker and is guaranteed to be 100% authentic - a timepiece to grace any collection!
Dial;-
Impressive and distinctive, high gloss, 'snowflake' white porcelain dial in very near mint condition - absolutely no marks or fading and just two or 3 extremely feint little hairlines showing under eyeglass only (so small are not showing up in the photographs, none detract but mentioning for accuracy) .
Bold black Roman numerals with black minute markers, bolder black 5 minute markers and black 'diamond' shaped 15 minute markers to chapter ring.
Recessed slightly textured sub dial with black Arabic numbers and black seconds chapters.
Finely cut, original bright blued steel spade and whip hands and original blued steel arrow tip seconds hand all in good straight, un-marked order.
Original thick bevel edge glass (not acrylic) in clear and bright condition with few very light and fine little surface scratches (again showing under eyeglass only) commensurate with age.
Case;-
The highly polished 9ct gold filled original Dennison satin finish case (5cm diameter / 7cm from top of bow to base) is heavy (has a pleasing solid feel in the hand and total watch weight is 99.8 grams), robust and in wonderful condition (please excuse the reflections/dark shadows in the pictures, was extremely difficult to photograph) - absolutely no wear or indentations and just a few little overall surface scratches commensurate with age and use in her 97 years service.
All covers (both inside and out) still retain their original, high gloss, mirror finish.
The front bezel snaps on and off correctly, closing tightly with a very reassuring click.
Back cover and dust cover are hinged at the six position - both open to a fraction over 90 degrees, again closing tightly and the 2 hinges are true and firm with absolutely no play.
The inside of the back cover (which has one light scratch, looks like someone once tested it to see if solid gold) is clearly stamped in arched script; Star Dennison Watch Case Co Ltd (Aaron Lufkin Dennison - one of the founding Fathers of the American Waltham Watch Co who moved to England to establish the Dennison Case Company. They made cases for all the leading watch manufacturers of the era including Rolex and Omega) and is numbered; 833700.
This number is correctly, partially repeated to the inside back case cuvette and the underside of the bezel lip; 3700.
Clearly stamped to the inside of the dust cover; English Make This Case Guaranteed To Wear 10 Years and is numbered; 833700 26 A - the 26 is the Dennison date numbering system; 1926 and the A is the first letter of the surname of the Goldsmith who pinned the case joints - unfortunately on this occasion I have been unable to identify him.
Movement;-
The stem wound and set high grade 15 ruby jewelled, 3/4 plate Swiss lever movement is in super clean and bright order (very tiny bit of age patina showing under eyeglass to the ratchet barrel cover) and as mentioned above has just been checked/serviced/new mainspring fitted by my highly experienced watch maker.
Carries the most wonderful vibrant 'fish scale' engine turning to the top plates - the detail of which remains as crisp and clear as the day it was made.
Has a solid bi-arm balance with brass balance screws with two brass meantime screws (for precision timing), steel flat balance spring which is true, in the round and 'breathing' well, large ruby jewels in sunken chaton settings, ruby end stone, ruby pallet jewels, beautifully engraved balance cock, attractive 'swirl' engine turning to the mainspring and ratchet barrel covers and steel case screws.
Stamped clearly on the top plates in arched black script; Swiss 15 Jewels 3 Adjustments is beautifully stamped around the mainspring barrel cover; Criterion and has their Trade symbol of a double pointed arrow within.
Balance action is excellent in all positions with a sure, strong positive action.
Runs like a train!
Winds smoothly and fully (do not be afraid to fully wind, over-winding is the greatest horological myth!)
Hand set operates smoothly and correctly - the pull up/push down action is very firm and true.
Lovely un-worn original large gold filled 'onion' crown.
Good original un-worn gold filled Dennison safety bow which is correctly stamped to one side; Dq - Dennison quality.
Appraisal;-
