A high-quality English made carriage clock by Bornand Frères, circa 1940’s. Bornand Frères was a descendant of the famous and illustrious French clockmaking Frères family dynasty, and operated out of Montbeliard, France, (his company specialising in producing premium 11 Jewel French carriage clocks). In late 1937, due to a worrying economic French climate and the talk of war in Europe, the company made the strategic decision to give licence to an English based partner to produce equally outstanding 7 Jewel carriage clocks built to the exacting same standards and design specs as those produced by their French owning partners. However, in 1939, the Montbeliard business was closed, leaving their English partners (based at Bicester, Oxon), to continue producing finely hand assembled, Bornand Frères signed, branded carriage clocks, until they too closed their UK clock making operation in c1950. This wonderfully compact brass framed, 5-glass carriage clock, has a rectangular white enamelled dial set with Roman (and smaller Arabic) numerals, the dial also being signed with “Bornand Frères, Bicester.” The dial is then finished with a pair of delicate and diminutive blued Straight Breguet hands. The case sits on a firm brass plinth and has a pleasingly designed solid brass carry handle, in-keeping with the clock’s ethos of easy and frequent transportation. The clocks clean and fabulously efficient 8-day, rear winding, 7 jewelled brass and steel movement, is accessed via its precisely fitted swivel back door. (The polished backplate is stamped with the Bornand Frères name and “Made in England, 7 Jewels”). The fine English made mechanism is driven by a superbly engineered platform escapement (serial number 563), with a single barrel train that ensures that this particular timepiece keeps exceptionally accurate time! The movement can be observed from the back, sides and top, due to its stunning 5-glass design. (The glaze to the front and top of the timepiece, being bevelled). The clock comes with a winding key. With the exemplary levels of craftsmanship and materials used in the manufacture of this wonderful carriage clock, it is accurate to state that his is a real thoroughbred in its class, and as such, fabulous value for money!
