Heritage, Craftsmanship & Authentic Character
This substantial 19th‑century naval trunk was made by J. Gieve & Sons of Portsmouth, the world‑famous naval outfitters whose history stretches back to the late 18th century. Constructed from pitch pine with iron banding and reinforced corners, it retains its original pale blue painted finish - beautifully worn, dry, and unwaxed - and bears a brass plaque engraved with the name of its owner, R.F.P. Maton, RN. The brass lock plate is stamped with the maker’s name, and the interior features its original candlestick holder.
Provenance - Commander Reginald Foster Pitt Maton, OBE
Born in Kensington in 1886, Reginald Foster Pitt Maton enjoyed a distinguished Royal Navy career. Promoted to Lieutenant in 1908, he commanded HMS Kite during 1915-1916 and, in 1918, was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire in King George V’s Birthday Honours. Rising to the rank of Commander, he played a prominent role in naval affairs, including serving on the Board of Enquiry into the sinking of HMS Hood by the Bismarck in 1941.
Maker’s History - J. Gieve & Sons
The origins of J. Gieve & Sons lie in a series of naval outfitter businesses dating back to the late 18th century. By 1854, Galt & Gieve were offering their first naval trunks - designed to carry an officer’s uniforms, equipment, and personal effects. In 1887, James Gieve became sole owner, and under his sons the company flourished, supplying the vast majority of Royal Navy cadets by the early 20th century. Their reputation was cemented by expansion to major British ports, the introduction of credit facilities, and high‑profile exhibitions such as the 1891 Royal Naval Exhibition in Chelsea. The firm evolved into Gieve, Matthews & Seagrove Ltd in 1904, and later Gieves Ltd in 1916. In 1974, they merged with Hawkes to form Gieves & Hawkes, now one of London’s most celebrated tailoring houses.

Styling Suggestions
This trunk is more than a storage piece - it’s a tangible link to Britain’s naval heritage. In a hallway, it could serve as a striking bench with hidden storage; in a study or library, it becomes a conversation piece, its weathered surface and engraved plaque inviting questions and stories. For collectors of maritime history, it offers both display value and a direct connection to a named officer whose career spanned two world wars.
Sustainability
Choosing antique seating is both an aesthetic and environmental decision - preserving craftsmanship, reducing waste, and reusing materials that have already stood the test of time.
