Description
19th Century Bronze Imperial Pint Measure by Potter of London
A rare dated Victorian bronze pint measure. This heavy measure, used to calibrate dry goods such as grain and cereals, is engraved for the ‘ORANJE VRY STAAT’ The Orange Free Sate of South Africa, and dated 1875. It is made by POTTER, LONDON and numbered 1592, it also features Customs & Excise stamps for Queen Victoria but these are very worn and only just visible
These very fine quality measures were used by Customs & Excise to check that market traders did not under-sell their customers by supplying short amounts.
One dent on the back otherwise in good antique condition, 4.5” high and 3.5” in diameter
