Description
A remarkable early 19th-century Belgian needle tapestry, inspired by the great tradition of Flemish and Brussels “verdures” from the 17th century
A magnificent piece, remarkable for the finesse of its quarter-stitch work and the richness of its composition. It features a superb design teeming with plants and animals, and its colors have retained their remarkable freshness. It is in perfect condition and is sold with its hanging system.
The particularly rich composition is organized around a central romantic and pastoral scene, depicting three elegant female figures in a wooded landscape, set against a backdrop of architecture. This scene is enveloped in lush vegetation that spreads across the entire tapestry in a remarkable profusion of flowers, foliage, and plants.
The charm and exceptional richness of this work lie in its extraordinary bestiary. Numerous birds, small mammals, and more fantastical or exotic animals are hidden among and intertwined with the abundant bouquets and foliage. Some emerge from among the flowers, while others take their place in the branches, giving the whole a sense of teeming, almost enchanted nature. This combination of abundant flora and a highly varied bestiary is characteristic of the tradition of Flemish “grandes verdures.”
A particularly refined execution
The quality of this tapestry lies above all in its extremely fine needlework.
The animals, as well as the entire central scene, are executed using the quarter-stitch, a particularly meticulous technique that allows for great finesse in the design and remarkable precision in the small details. The faces, silhouettes, costumes, animals, and certain elements of the landscape are thus rendered with exceptional clarity.
This use of the quarter-stitch technique is one of the piece’s most remarkable features: it attests to exceptionally meticulous workmanship and allows for the delicate rendering of expressions, costume details, plumage, fur, and numerous decorative elements.
The tapestry is also surrounded by a wide, richly ornamented floral border, composed of flowers, foliage, and plant motifs on a dark background, which frames and highlights the central composition.
