Description
Offered for sale is a very elegant Faience (majolica) candlestick made by Fourmaintraux Frères of Desvres, during the 1877-1887 period. It is a bright, colourfully decorated with stylised flowers and butterflies. faience candlestick on a raised square base with four feet and signed maker's monogram to the underside. It stands approximately 235mm in height and the base approximately 100mm square; whilst the sconce is approximately 60mm in diameter with a 25mm diameter candle well. The Fourmaintraux, were a great dynasty of earthenware makers. Fourmaintraux-Hornoy, Fourmaintraux-Courquin etc… The first to settle in Desvres was Fourmaintraux Bénard 1804-1841. They have five descendants. One of the sons François marries a Hornoy Charlotte (Fourmaintraux-Hornoy), they have 9 descendants who inherited the earthenware factory in 1872. The first company formed was Fourmaintraux brothers and sisters. Then the Fourmaintraux brothers, Jules and Émile, took over the company, in 1877, it then became the FOURMAINTRAUX FRÈRES company which would last until April 6, 1887. Émile separated from his brother Jules who continued on his own. The three companies: Fourmaintraux brothers and sisters, Fourmaintraux brothers and Fourmaintraux Jules have signed their pieces FF . The inspiration for Desvres earthenware is inspired by the most famous factories such as Delft, Rouen, Moustier, Nevers and Strasbourg.

condition

The candlestick in in very good overall condition. There is a minor chips to the back of one of the feet and the edge of the sconce. There is also a barely visible crack along the base of the stem which does not affect the stability or integrity of the piece, nor its display qualities.(Please see photo's).
