Description
Antique French Animalier Bronze Frog Sculpture, c.1850
Parisian Workshop – In the Manner of Jules Moigniez – Natural Patina
Description
An authentic and beautifully cast mid-19th-century French bronze frog, produced in a Parisian workshop circa 1850. This charming small sculpture is executed in the animalier style that became a hallmark of 19th-century French art, championed by sculptors such as Christophe Fratin, Antoine-Louis Barye, and Jules Moigniez.
Modelled in the manner of Moigniez, the piece captures the soft, rounded contours and naturalistic vitality characteristic of his school. Although unsigned, as was typical of Parisian workshop bronzes of the period, the quality of the modelling and casting unmistakably reflects French craftsmanship.
Cast by the lost-wax (cire perdue) process, the bronze has acquired a rich, naturally aged patina of deep brown and olive tones, enhanced by gentle handling over more than a century and a half. The underside retains its original casting vent hole — entirely correct for Parisian foundry practice of the mid-19th century.
Small-scale bronzes of this kind were highly prized by collectors during the era, including William T. Walters, whose celebrated collection of French animalier bronzes helped define connoisseurship in the field. This piece offers a tactile and engaging presence, ideal for collectors of antique bronzes, animalier sculpture, or 19th-century decorative art.
