Description
Late 19th Century French Brass Christ Blessing Sunburst Plaque Anonymous French Ecclesiastical Workshop Haloed Christ Blessing Within a Radiant Glory, Circa 1890 Highlights • Late 19th-century French Catholic devotional wall plaque. • Depicts the haloed figure of Christ raising his right hand in blessing. • Finely embossed face, flowing hair, beard and classical robes. • Surrounded by an elaborate arrangement of graduated sunburst rays. • Formed from pressed and embossed brass. • Retains its original hanging loop. • Displays historic oxidation, patination and natural green verdigris. • Reportedly originating from a convent in France. • An appealing example of antique French ecclesiastical metalwork. Introduction A charming late 19th-century French brass devotional plaque depicting Christ Blessing, haloed and surrounded by a radiant sunburst glory. Christ is presented in half-length relief with a serene expression, long flowing hair and a carefully defined beard. His right hand is raised in the established gesture of benediction or religious teaching, while classical drapery falls across his shoulders and chest. A plain circular halo appears immediately behind the head of Christ. Beyond the central medallion, groups of graduated rays form an impressive gloire rayonnante, symbolising divine illumination and heavenly authority. Despite its small scale, the plaque possesses considerable decorative and sculptural presence. Its original suspension loop remains in place, allowing it to be displayed on a wall within a private chapel, traditional interior or collection of religious antiques. Catalogue Details Maker: Anonymous French ecclesiastical workshop Title: Christ Blessing Within a Radiant Glory French Title: Le Christ bénissant auréolé dans une gloire rayonnante Date: Circa 1890 Period: Late 19th century Origin: France Object Type: Catholic devotional wall plaque Subject: The haloed Christ Blessing Material: Brass Technique: Embossed and pressed relief Display: Original hanging loop Catalogue Note The plaque depicts Christ Blessing, known in French religious iconography as Le Christ bénissant. The raised right hand is traditionally associated with benediction, teaching and spiritual authority. The circular form behind Christ’s head is his halo or auréole, while the larger arrangement of projecting rays forms a radiant glory. The subject should not be described specifically as the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The plaque does not display the flaming heart, crown of thorns or other attributes normally associated with Sacred Heart imagery. Examination of the reverse indicates that the relief was formed from comparatively thin brass using embossing or pressing techniques. It was not cast as a substantial solid-bronze sculpture. This method of manufacture enabled French ecclesiastical workshops to reproduce devotional objects for churches, convents, private chapels and domestic prayer spaces. Historical Context The French religious-art industry expanded considerably during the second half of the 19th century. Catholic institutions required decorative and devotional objects for newly constructed churches, restored interiors, convents and schools. Smaller religious furnishings also became increasingly available for personal and domestic use. Parisian suppliers concentrated around the Saint-Sulpice district became closely associated with religious sculpture and ecclesiastical furnishings. Numerous provincial businesses likewise produced plaques, crucifixes and devotional images in brass, bronze, plaster, terracotta and wood. Many of these objects were unsigned and created using repeatable models. Unless an identifying mark or exact contemporary catalogue illustration survives, the original manufacturer can rarely be established securely. The Maker No signature, workshop stamp or manufacturer’s trademark is visible. The plaque is consequently catalogued as the work of an anonymous French ecclesiastical workshop active during the late 19th century. The image follows the longstanding Renaissance and Baroque tradition of representing Christ Blessing. However, no sufficiently close relationship with a particular painting, engraving or sculpture has been identified to justify an attribution to a named artist. Provenance Reportedly originating from a convent in France. Subsequently acquired from a private seller. The convent provenance was supplied at the time of acquisition. No documentary record identifying the original institution accompanies the plaque. Dimensions Height: 14.2 cm or 5.6 inches Width: 13.2 cm or 5.2 inches Depth: 1 cm or 0.4 inches All dimensions are approximate. Condition Report Presented in charming antique condition with wear consistent with age and devotional use. The brass displays darkened patination, oxidation, historic rubbing, abrasions and areas of natural green verdigris. The verdigris is particularly visible around the hair, beard, drapery, central border, radiating rays and reverse. The projecting sunburst displays minor age-related irregularities and historic edge wear. The original hanging loop remains present. The plaque has not been aggressively polished, allowing its naturally aged surface and historic character to remain intact. Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an integral part of the condition report. Worldwide Shipping Worldwide shipping is available. The plaque will be professionally packed, with additional care taken to protect the projecting rays and hanging loop during transit. International purchasers are responsible for any customs duties, import taxes or local clearance charges imposed by their destination country. Attribution And Research Notice The attribution, date, historical interpretation and provenance information contained within this catalogue entry represent the professional, non-guaranteed opinion of Cheshire Antiques Consultant LTD®. The conclusions are offered in good faith following visual examination, comparative stylistic research, consultation of published reference material and consideration of the available provenance information. The term “Anonymous French Ecclesiastical Workshop” indicates an object by an unidentified maker considered likely to have been working within the French religious and ecclesiastical metalworking tradition of the late 19th century. It does not assert an attribution to any named manufacturer, sculptor or workshop. The dating and French origin are based upon the plaque’s iconography, materials, construction, surface character and reported provenance. These observations are professional opinions rather than guarantees of maker, attribution, date, origin, provenance, authenticity or historical interpretation. Future documentary discoveries, conservation examination or scientific analysis may refine or revise the present conclusions. Cheshire Antiques Consultant LTD® Specialising in carefully curated British and European fine art, antiques and historic works of art. Every artwork and object is professionally researched and catalogued using comparative scholarship, published reference material and more than two decades of experience within the international fine art market.
