Description
A vitrine of this calibre appears on the open market rarely. This exceptional late 19th-century Parisian display cabinet - stamped to the lock hardware C. Linke, Serrurerie, Paris - represents the Belle Époque cabinetmaking tradition at its most accomplished: a commission of the highest order, executed with the precision and decorative richness for which the Linke workshops became the most celebrated name in Parisian furniture of the period. François Linke (1855–1946) is widely regarded as the greatest French ébéniste of the Belle Époque. Working from his atelier on the Place Vendôme, Linke supplied the finest furniture to aristocratic and haute-bourgeois clients across Europe, Russia, and the Americas. His pieces - characterised by exceptional quality of veneer work, ormolu casting of the highest standard, and a supreme command of the Louis XV and Louis XVI decorative vocabulary - are today held in major museum and private collections worldwide, and appear regularly at Christie's, Sotheby's, and Drouot. The Piece This vitrine is a work of considerable scale and presence - 157cm in height, 111cm in width, and 39cm in depth - conceived to dominate a salon or drawing room. The kingwood veneer, laid in a parquetry chevron pattern across the façade and sides, provides a warm, richly figured ground against which the gilded ormolu mounts read with exceptional clarity. The upper section is a fully glazed display cabinet of generous proportions, with a large central door flanked by angled glazed side panels - the glazing bevelled and set within beaded gilt-bronze frames. The interior is lined throughout in original deep red silk fabric, in good and intact condition, providing the ideal backdrop for the display of porcelain, silver, or objects of vertu. Two adjustable glass shelves are fitted within. The lower section is closed by three painted panels - a large central panel flanked by two smaller side panels - each depicting pastoral romantic scenes in the French tradition: figures in landscapes rendered with considerable finesse and well-preserved colour. These panels are in the Vernis Martin manner, with warm ochre and sienna tones characteristic of the finest Belle Époque decorative painting. Ormolu Mounts The ormolu mounts throughout are of the highest casting quality - a hallmark of Linke's workshop, which consistently employed the finest Parisian fondeurs. The frieze mount across the top is an elaborate continuous scroll of acanthus, centred by a mascaron mask flanked by griffins and foliate swags - a design of considerable sculptural depth and crisp detail. Corner mounts are of the trophy and ribbon type. The cabriole legs terminate in gilt sabots, with a central apron mount of foliate and shell form. All mounts are present, with no losses, and retain their warm original gilding with an honest patina consistent with age. Attribution: The lock mechanism is stamped C. Linke / Serrurerie / Paris - confirming original period Linke hardware. François Linke worked with specialist Parisian hardware and locksmith suppliers who stamped their components, and the presence of this stamp on the original lock mechanism is consistent with documented Linke production.
