Description
19th century Girandole wall sconce is a stunningly unique piece of art, crafted in brass with a square beveled mirror and three distinct branches. Adding an element of timeless beauty to any room while you enjoy the captivating reflection it creates. To appreciate this piece please look closely at the casting. There are some wonderful floral details, the crest features a bearded man with a flowers as a head (cannot tell you who this is). Down each side you have mythical beasts surrounded by foliage, and an head of a man with a reptile wrapping around his head, and the head wear looks Egyptian at first glance. The branches are intricately cast, with a drip tray and sconce. Overall a charming piece. Marked on the back with A3336 Hrh The origin of girandoles can be traced back to the late 17th century in Europe, particularly in France. They emerged during the Baroque and Rococo periods, which were characterized by ornate and extravagant artistic styles. Girandoles were initially designed as wall-mounted candle holders, consisting of metal or wooden frames with multiple branches for candles. During the 18th century, girandoles became increasingly elaborate and decorative. They were often crafted from gilded bronze or ormolu and embellished with intricate designs, such as floral motifs, acanthus leaves, and mythological figures. Crystal and glass drops, pendants, and prisms were added to enhance the reflective and refractive qualities of the light. Period: Circa 1840-1860 Material: Brass & Beveled Mirror
