19th Century Paneled Monks Chest
REF: 1001288 / LA360925
With this 19th century Monks chest lined with the Manchester Courier newspaper dated Tuesday, August 13th, 1872, you cannot better pinpoint a piece of furniture more accurately than this. So one would assume it was made prior to 1872. If you fancy a Sunday read, then jump inside, as it is cavernous, and see what went on in 1872. Fascinating reading the adverts, one by a local dentist advertising painless operations by the aid of laughing gas. Sounds fun! The external oak finish of the chest is wonderful, full of charm with years of depth and colour beaming out from the grain across the whole piece. The lid is something else, showing years of scars, marks and is hinged with two sturdy iron hinges (can be seen in the rear photo's). The front has three raised and fielded arched panels, each section is held together with a traditional tenon and visible dowel on each joint. Below the panels, you have two drawers, each with a marquetry border in another lighter timber surrounding a plain centre panel and brass handles. Look carefully at the rear photos, as whoever constructed this Monks chest must have acquired some beautiful timber, so they used this for the construction and did some 19th-century recycling at the same time. This gorgeous carved timber was used for the bottom frame of the chest and they didn't skimp, as they used solid timber pieces throughout the construction. On one rear section, there is a very faint inscription on the timber. A stunning piece of history, would look great as a side console in most rooms, sat in the entrance to a hallway. Anyway, the paper lining is nice to see. However, I am guessing the Monk never wore white shirts, as they would have ended up grey pretty quickly.
