Online only, based in stunning Speyside, Moray, Scotland, we (Mr & Mrs W) are passionate about quality antique items with great design and evident craft, predominantly from the 18th, 19th and early 20th century. In particular, we enjoy period items reflecting the beautiful design and aesthetic changes from the decorative arts, from circa 1850 - 1960. Including the Aesthetic Movement, Art Nouveau, Arts & Crafts Movement (In particular of Scottish origin), Modernism, Art Deco and Streamlining. We also enjoy the great craft and quality construction in folk art and vernacular items from across Europe. In particular, Scandinavian decorative items from the 18th and 19th Century. We enjoy being analytical in our approach and supporting our stock with background research, provenance and history through researching the items, the period, designers and retailers. We often hunt the country from our Scottish location, but routinely search from Lancashire and Yorkshire as well as buying trips further afield to supply items online. We also like to take on items that particularly interest us from earlier periods, dependent on our fascination for an object. We are always learning, and happy to share knowledge gained, so please do get in touch. Thanks for viewing our selection of stock, we are always pleased to see items pass through our hands to new owners and homes as antiques remain a great green recyclable purchase! Description
For sale is a beautiful mid 19th Century ‘Bobbin-turned' Darvel high comb-backed Windsor chair c. 1860-90 attributed to similar armchairs made by John McMath of Darvel, from the Irvine Valley.  John McMath was one of a small number of known makers of Irvine valley Windsor chairs in Newmilns and Darvel.  This chair has some lovely details: - The elaborate / bold bobbin turning detail to the underarm supports, legs and H-stretchers. - A curved Ash arm bow with end finials and constructed from two pieces meeting in an overlapping scarf joint - Darvel chairs have a very comfortable, raked and enclosed comb design with strong / heavy and robust construction -  This chair has 10 high back spindles indicating a mid-later Victorian chair with the fashionable elaborate turnings - Large D-shaped seat slab of thick birch (likely imported American birch) into which the legs and all spindles socket (not through) - The seat is contoured to the front for knee comfort and the rear is supported by the splayed rear legs  - This chair is notable in that it is a very similar design combination of top rail design, elaborate bobbin turned terminus spindles to the arm bow, H-stretcher and elaborate decoration to the legs ending in a ball turning along with the splayed nature of the rear legs as show in Cotton (2008) on page 206. A beautiful elegant Scottish design, executed in a robust and comfortable manner due to the raked stance ready for its next 150+ years of utility. Free delivery to the UK mainland as priced. International buyers are welcome, but please contact us prior to payment to confirm the additional packaging, insurance and shipping costs by way of acceptance to your country. Purchaser responsible for local import tariffs/fees.  If you are interested in multiple items, please contact us for combined postage.
