Based in stunning Perthshire, Scotland, near Crieff we (Mr & Mrs W) are passionate about quality antique items with great design and evident craft, predominantly from the 18th, 19th and early 20th century. In particular, we enjoy period items reflecting the beautiful design and aesthetic changes from the decorative arts, from circa 1850 - 1960. Including the Aesthetic Movement, Art Nouveau, Arts & Crafts Movement (In particular of Scottish origin), Modernism, Art Deco and Streamlining. We also enjoy the great craft and quality construction in folk art and vernacular items from across Europe. In particular, Scandinavian decorative items from the 18th and 19th Century. We enjoy being analytical in our approach and supporting our stock with background research, provenance and history through researching the items, the period, designers and retailers. We often hunt the country from our Scottish location, but routinely search from Lancashire and Yorkshire as well as buying trips further afield to supply items online. We also like to take on items that particularly interest us from earlier periods, dependent on our fascination for an object. We are always learning, and happy to share knowledge gained, so please do get in touch. Thanks for viewing our selection of stock, we are always pleased to see items pass through our hands to new owners and homes as antiques remain a great green recyclable purchase! Description
For sale is a beautiful Scottish Northern Isles vernacular armchair. In the distinctive design shape of Orkney. The characteristics of this armchair with enclosed design and seat drawer from the second half of 19th Century. - This vernacular example has been converted a long-time ago to solid pine panel boards and retains the previous marks in the seat rail from where the straw-backed section would have been connected to the uprights (both forms to keep out drafts). In this solid form these chairs are seen infrequently but similar examples to this one are displayed in the Kirbuster museum on Orkney and must have been adapted when timber was more readily available either as driftwood or with the import of timbers from Scandinavia, mainland Scotland and the Baltic region in the 19th Century. - This rare panelled example also has a very distinctive set of three arm spindle supports beneath the gently curved arms and a large single draw beneath the seat with naively made handle to store personal belongings. - The chair is solid and unusually large for an Orkney chair across the shoulders as many are small for a modern height/frame. It has been adapted in its life, repaired, patched and nailed together in places and retains considerable charm throughout. It retains evidence of a yellow/ochre paint in places and wear, marks and evidence of use for an antique everyday chair such as this. Ready for decorative utility in a new kitchen or firehoose.
