We enjoy being analytical in our approach and supporting our stock with background research, provenance and history through researching the items, the period, designers and retailers. We often hunt the country from our Scottish location, but routinely search from Lancashire and Yorkshire as well as buying trips further afield to supply items online. We also like to take on items that particularly interest us from earlier periods, dependent on our fascination for an object. Description
For sale is a Scottish decorative spongeware footed bowl and Scottish silver capped horn spoon. - A naively attractive bowl and horn spoon from the 19th Century, used for a range of foodstuffs from porridge, soup, vegetables, bread & milk. - The spongeware bowl has lived a life of utility and is decorated with two repeat pattern chains around the rim and side of the bowl in blue, green, and brown. - Used in many working, rural homes across Scotland and the highlands, Ireland and exported across the Empire these footed bowls were naively and quickly painted by pieceworkers, sponging on the colours and patterns. - The bowl as seen by the images has survived use with age-related wear, a hairline crack, glaze crazing with staining, and knocks from 140 years+ of utility. - The horn spoon has a silver / white metal-capped end and small decorative shield, with a rubbed marking to the cap, presumed to be a silver cap/finial. A beautiful and attractive primitive vessel and spoon.
