This is a pair of unfinished samplers on linen from the north of England, with one being older and more fascinating than the other. Both are damaged and discoloured but they would form an interesting addition to a collection, or they could be used as study pieces. One is twelve inches square, with the usual alphabets and numbers. This is badly marked and faded. It was done by 'Carmen M Buone' - or 'Luche'. The surname is very hard to read. She was nine years old and a good little seamstress but the sampler has suffered greatly over time. I've included a picture of the reverse. The second piece - bigger, at seventeen by thirteen inches - could be Georgian. It is unfinished, but would have been wonderful. There is no name or date on it, which is a great pity, but it is on very fine linen, with a border, a fabulous house, birds, beasts, trees and flowers. The blue shades have survived, but as you can see in the pictures, everything else has faded to beige and brown on a brown background, like a ghost of something beautiful. I note that even on the border she has stitched some tiny animals and she seems to have a liking for cats. I think she had a liking for the pictorial too and was less interested in alphabets and numbers. There is one alphabet completed, and - cryptically - a number 8 and two little symbols next to it. Could that possibly have been her age? Sad that it was never finished, and you do wonder what became of her. I'm selling several samplers, so please enquire if you are interested in all of them.
