All these years of looking at textiles and I don't know what these are, except that I'm sure they're very old: Georgian in all likelihood: delicate and incredibly pretty: sourced here in Scotland, but they may have come from elsewhere in Europe. Each measures only 6 inches square. The zig-zag embroidery looks a bit like Bargello or Florentine work, but obviously not on canvas - these are worked on an incredibly fine, almost translucent hand woven linen. I wonder if they are Italian? The linen is ecru with some discolouration all round the edges - although it doesn't detract from the embroidery - and these are also edged with a hand stitched trim - incredibly fine, one in pale green and pink, one in pale blue and lemon silk. This work was covered up by the frames, so only came to light when we took them out but the framing has preserved the colours. The centres are beautifully embroidered with a design that includes what looks like delicate drawn work, in pale pink and cream, or darker pink and cream, one centre panel edged with a silver metallic thread and one with gold. Intriguingly, each one has an anchor embroidered in the middle. Why? Were they done while a beloved husband was away at sea? Were they done to commemorate a sea battle? (I keep thinking of Jane Austen's heroines!) Were they what they seem? Simple decorative mats? Or were they designed to decorate something else? I don't know, but they are intriguing and very pretty.
The 200 Year Old House has clarified that the 2 X Georgian Embroidered Squares, Silk, Linen, Gold Thread, Anchors (LA175240) is genuinely of the period declared with the date/period of manufacture being c1800
These are extremely old, both 6 inches square, with some discolouration to the linen at the edges, and a few loose threads on the very delicate hand-done lacy edging, although the pink and cream silk embroidery, with its drawnwork, and gold and silver metallic edging, is in good condition, preserved by having been framed up for some years. These are unframed and I'm happy to post them overseas.
