Description
A Collection of Three Omar Ramsden Arts & Crafts Sterling Silver Spoons, London 1921–1931 A rare opportunity to acquire a carefully curated collection of three original Omar Ramsden sterling silver spoons, each individually hallmarked for London and dating from the height of the British Arts & Crafts movement. Omar Ramsden (1873–1939) is regarded as one of Britain's greatest twentieth-century silversmiths. His work is represented in major museum collections and is admired for its exceptional craftsmanship, sculptural quality and unmistakable hand-finished decoration inspired by medieval and natural forms. Rather than three unrelated pieces, this collection spans a decade of Ramsden's production and beautifully illustrates the subtle evolution of his distinctive style whilst retaining the individual character that makes his work so highly collectable. I intend to sell as a set but would consider selling 1 or 2, please contact me for individual prices. Spoon One | London 1921 | Length: 16 cm | Weight: 48 grams An elegant spoon with one of Ramsden's most recognisable flowing Arts & Crafts terminals. The pierced organic decoration rises from the stem into a beautifully modelled stylised flower head, giving the piece an almost architectural quality. The openwork design demonstrates the hand-crafted aesthetic for which Ramsden became renowned. The decoration remains crisp and well defined with excellent overall proportions. Spoon Two | London 1931 | Length: 16 cm | Weight: 53 grams A striking later example featuring an attractive hand-hammered circular terminal engraved with the original owner's initials A.K.S. above the date 1931. The design displays an elegant intertwining foliate design with deeply chased leaves radiating towards the bowl, producing a wonderfully tactile surface that immediately identifies the spoon as Ramsden's work. This spoon combines restrained decoration with superb craftsmanship and represents Ramsden's mature period. Spoon Three | London 1929 | Length: 17 cm | Weight: 66 grams The largest and heaviest spoon within the collection. This impressive example features a richly sculpted stem decorated with flowing berries, leaves and scrolling foliage, terminating in a distinctive six-point crown-like knop. The deep relief and exceptional modelling give the spoon an almost sculptural presence and demonstrate the quality of Ramsden's workshop at its finest. At 66 grams, this is a particularly substantial example and one that displays the confidence and individuality for which Omar Ramsden's work is celebrated. Condition All three spoons are in very good antique condition with crisp decoration and clearly struck London hallmarks together with Omar Ramsden's maker's mark. They display only light surface wear consistent with careful use over the last century and have not been excessively polished, preserving the fine detail of the hand-finished decoration. Summary Omar Ramsden maker's mark on all three spoons London hallmarks Dates: 1921, 1929 & 1931 Sterling silver (.925) Total weight: 167 grams Lengths: 16 cm, 17 cm and 16 cm Excellent collector's condition Collections of Omar Ramsden silver are becoming increasingly difficult to assemble, particularly groups that span several years of production whilst retaining such variety of design. This trio offers an exceptional opportunity to acquire three genuine examples by one of Britain's foremost Arts & Crafts silversmiths in a single purchase.
