Antique 17th Century Oak Jacobean Chest of Drawers

A 17th century oak Jacobean chest of drawers, with a three-drawer vertical arrangement, comprising a single deeper drawer to the top, above two shallower drawers arranged one above the other below. This form is characteristic of early English chests from the Jacobean period. The chest stands on two original bun feet to the front, with original straight rear legs. The brass handles are later, dating to the early 18th century. The front is richly detailed with Jacobean-style mouldings and carved decoration, giving the piece strong presence and character. The oak has developed a deep, warm surface consistent with its considerable age. To the reverse, the name “R Peake” is written in large letters. The exact significance of this marking is unknown and may relate to a former owner, retailer, or transporter, rather than the original maker. A rare and characterful survivor, suitable for a period interior or as a statement piece in a more eclectic setting.
