Antique 19th Century French Empire Flame Mahogany Sofa with Carved Details

A superb example of French Empire craftsmanship, this early 19th-century carved mahogany sofa showcases the strong, symbolic design language of the period. The shaped back features a finely carved central shell cartouche flanked by mythical diving dolphins with detailed scale work. This scale pattern continues along the top wooden border, running smoothly to each side and unifying the design. The arms are carved as winged eagles — a typical Empire motif drawn from classical and Napoleonic symbolism. Their detailing is clear, well-proportioned, and characteristic of the style. The sofa is raised on scrolling feet that complete its balanced and elegant profile. The frame is constructed from richly figured flame mahogany and remains in very good condition for its age of more than 180 years. The upholstery, refreshed within the last 20 years, is a soft blue floral fabric — so light it is almost mistaken for white — adding a gentle decorative touch without distracting from the carved timber.
