Antique 9ct Gold Green Tourmaline & Pearl Art Nouveau Pendant – Gourdel Vales & Co Edwardian c.1905

An exquisite Edwardian Art Nouveau pendant, beautifully handcrafted in 9ct gold and set with vibrant green tourmalines and delicate seed pearls. Dating to around 1905, the circular openwork design is wonderfully typical of the Art Nouveau period, combining graceful geometric lines with finely modelled naturalistic foliage. At the top sits a charming flower motif centred with a creamy white pearl, framed by beautifully textured gold leaves. Suspended beneath are four articulated round-cut green tourmalines, each set within a finely detailed millegrain-style collet. Their fresh leafy green colour complements the warm gold beautifully and allows the stones to move gently and catch the light when worn. A second small pearl sits at the centre of the lower openwork design, adding a delicate contrast to the richly coloured tourmalines. The pendant is signed G V & Co, for Gourdel, Vales & Co, an Anglo-French jewellery and silversmithing partnership active during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods. Their surviving jewellery is admired for its fine craftsmanship and elegant period design. Light and beautifully balanced, this is a particularly attractive example of Edwardian Art Nouveau jewellery and would look lovely worn from a fine gold chain.
