A lovely original Pill Maker dating from the late 1800s, used by chemists to mould ingredients into pills. It consists of two main parts, the board and the roller. The roller is made of thick strong mahogany with two handles. It fits over the sides of the board and has wheels to enable it to roll backwards and forwards. The underneath of the roller is fitted with a brass plate with grooves in it that match the board, enabling the mixture to be pressed into the grooves and formed into a tubular shape, ready to be weighed and cut into pills. The board is made of mahogany with brass sides and matching brass grooves. It has a removable wooden end tray which would catch the pills and allow them to be easily transferred to jars etc.
It has a maker's stamp for "J.W.Pindar & Co. Engineers. Brockley. London".
It is excellent quality and has remained in very good original condition. The wood has various marks and small knocks and scratches that have been picked up over the years but that all adds to the patina and original look. There is a small chip on the handle of the roller and one of the screws holding the plate has been replaced (See photo) but it still displays well.
The best description comes from the photos so please look at them all carefully and if you have any questions just ask.
