Description
Wall hanging clock and aneroid barometer with thermometer set in an attractive Arts & Crafts style carved olive wood case c.1870.
Aneroid barometer having 6” zinc backed black printed card dial with standard meteorological terms, the semi-circular barometric scale calibrated in inches with a range from 28" – 31" divided to 1/20th, the lower part with horizontally mounted thermometer set on a register calibrated in degrees Fahrenheit and Centigrade, with corresponding ranges of 0°-140° and -10° to 60°. Blued steel pointer, gilt index, bevelled glass. The aneroid movement of conventional Vidie pattern driven from a single 2¾” capsule tensioned on a C spring.
The clock with 5” enamel dial, roman chapter ring, Breguet hands, aperture for winding square, 7 day movement, platform escapement. Supplied with key.
All presented in a well carved olive wood case with natural themes. The verso with calibration port for barometer, removable back cover for clock, and wall hanging plate.
Condition: The barometer fully serviced, conserved, and calibrated under laboratory conditions. The movement working well with exceptionally good resolution and accuracy, see performance chart from dynamic test. The barometer dial with some marks, losses and signs of age, the thermometer working and accurate within 3° at 70°F. The clock running.
Comments: A really quite early and slightly unusual example of what became known as Arts & Crafts, with lighter tones and attractive acanthus leaf and ribbon subjects. A fine addition to any room lending interesting decorative focus.
