Description
Antique Automaton Pocket Watch. 18K Gold. Quarter Repeater. Humbert, Switzerland, ca. 1820 This antique Genevan gold pocket watch with quarter repeater and automatons, made around 1820 by the renowned master watchmaker Louis Humbert of Geneva, represents one of the most refined and theatrical examples of early nineteenth century Swiss horology. Crafted in 18K rose gold, the result is an elegant and distinguished piece with an extraordinary visual presence. The skeletonised dial reveals the animated composition created through raised figures where two indigenous warriors with headdresses and exotic inspiration flank the wheel train and hold bows in their hands. This is a perfect example of the romantic and theatrical taste for ancient peoples and their imagery that dominated the European imagination between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Above them rise the small bells struck by the automatons when the repeater is activated. The scene is completed by vegetal motifs and symbolic elements that harmonise with the golden tones of the movement. The outer ring, in rose gold, displays elegant Roman numerals that frame the composition. The mechanics of the watch are a marvel of traditional Genevan watchmaking. The full plate movement is of excellent manufacture and is signed “Louis Humbert à Genève”, a guarantee of quality and precision. It performs very well in both its timekeeping and its complication, keeping time accurately and striking the correct number of hours and quarters. When the crown is pressed downward, the quarter repeater is activated and the two jacquemart warrior automatons hammer the bells in perfect synchrony with the quarters, offering a mechanical spectacle as surprising as it is charming. The case, sober and refined, features a delicate guilloché pattern on the back cover and preserves its shape, hinges and closure very well. Although it may show slight signs of use consistent with two centuries of age, these only reinforce its authenticity and character. This is a piece that attracts both for its beauty and for its complexity, ideal for inclusion in an advanced watch collection. A mechanical jewel with a unique magnetism, it is difficult not to imagine the life of the watch, who may have owned it, where it may have travelled and in whose hands it may have rested. Its rarity, its condition and its spectacular scenic presence make it an exceptional opportunity. The owner of such a watch acquires not only a very special jewel but becomes the custodian of an irreplaceable fragment of European horological art. History of Louis Humbert and of Jacquemart Automaton Watches Louis Humbert was a Genevan watchmaker active during the first decades of the nineteenth century, a period in which Geneva established itself as one of the most influential centres of high watchmaking in Europe. The Genevan workshops were famous for the quality of their movements and, above all, for producing luxury watches destined for wealthy clients throughout Europe and the Ottoman Empire. From this environment emerged pieces equipped with repeaters, automatons, animated scenes, precious cases and elaborate artisanal finishes. Humbert belonged to that generation of masters who elevated decorative watchmaking to an extraordinary artistic level. Watches with jacquemarts, figures that strike bells when the repeater is activated, have their origin in the great medieval clock towers with automatons. Once adapted to the size of a pocket watch they became symbols of technical and ornamental virtuosity. Their popularity was particularly notable between 1780 and 1830, coinciding with the great expansion of the Eastern market and with the European taste for exotic or theatrical scenes. The automatons not only embellished the watch but also demonstrated the skill of the master watchmaker and the wealth of the owner. The quarter repeater found in this example was the most highly valued complication before the development of minute repeaters. It allowed the time to be known in the dark or without looking at the watch, through sequences of strikes that indicated the hours and elapsed quarters. The precision required to harmonise the repeater mechanism with the automatons made these watches small masterpieces of watchmaking engineering. Today, pieces signed by Humbert with jacquemart automatons are highly sought after by collectors of historical complications. They retain not only exceptional aesthetic and mechanical value but also a profound cultural significance. They represent the ingenuity, imagination and splendour of the great Swiss watchmaking tradition before industrialisation.
