A charming late 19th–early 20th century miniature chest of drawers, crafted in richly toned hardwood and finished with a warm, time softened patina. The piece is of compact proportions yet confidently architectural, featuring four graduated drawers fitted with turned wooden knobs.
The drawers are constructed with hand cut dovetail joints, clearly visible from the sides, attesting to traditional craftsmanship rather than later decorative reproduction. Flanking the drawer front are solid uprights terminating in carved scroll corbels, lending the piece a subtle classical influence and a sense of gravitas beyond its scale. The top has a gently moulded edge, completing the well balanced form.
× The flat, unfinished-looking side, flat base and visible fixing point on the left, all suggest this was originally intended to be attached to a larger piece of furniture, rather than standing alone. It’s likely it functioned as a side pedestal or drawer unit fitted beneath or beside a desk, writing table, or possibly a workbench or shop counter.
Wear throughout is entirely consistent with age: light surface marks, gentle colour variation, and areas of honest rubbing that enhance its character rather than detract from it.
One of the handles has been replaced, vizable chip to the scroll on the left side and missing one screw on the lock - working lock with key.
