Description
Antique British Silver Fusee Verge Pocket Watch
An exceptional, original George III period timepiece featuring a silver pair-cased pocket watch layout, complete with an unusually early subsidiary seconds configuration and elegant Arabic numerals.
The Movement
• Maker: Hand-engraved and signed "Jas. Smith, London" (James Smith), a maker active during the late Georgian era.
• Type: Traditional British verge fusee movement, featuring a beautifully pierced, ornate hand-engraved balance cock.
• Serial Number: Fully tracked and stamped with the workshop registry number N° 791.
The Case & Hallmarks
• Date & Origin: Assayed at the London Assay Office with the date letter "H" designating the exact year 1803.
• Composition: Solid Sterling Silver (.925 purity) inner and outer pair cases with a diameter of 6cm. The inner case displays historical gold-gilded vermeil highlights.
• Case Maker: Stamped with the sponsor mark "I·G", representing a prominent London watch case maker of the period (such as John Giles or John Garrand)
The Dial & Hands
• Dial: Original white enamel dial featuring a rare combination for this early date: crisp Arabic numeral hour markers paired with a dedicated subsidiary seconds tracking register at the 6 o'clock position.
• Hands: Outfitted with its original, delicate gold-toned Georgian beetle-and-poker style hands and a fine steel seconds hand.
