This is an antique carved folio stand. A Burmese, mahogany folding gentleman's newspaper rack, dating to the early Victorian period, circa 1850. Excellent craftsmanship with striking carved detail. Displays a desirable aged patina and in superb order. Select stocks show fine grain interest and deep russet hues. Enthusiastically decorated with skilful carvings and delicate fretwork. Prominent top rail presenting a pair of elephants framed with decorative finials. Fascia host chased foliate patterns, the fall front with a seated deity relief holding the fronds. Shaped fall articulates downwards, held securely with a brass chain stay. Pierced fretwork brackets add a distinguished touch to the lower stand. Raised upon splayed square section legs to each corner. The whole folds away for ease of carriage in the campaign manner.
