Description
A superb late-Victorian writing desk in richly figured mahogany, profusely carved and crowned with an ornate pierced cresting. The whole presents with a deep antique colour, fine cabinetmaking with bold sculptural detail.
Highlights:-
Date: circa 1900
Timber: Solid mahogany with beautiful figure and patination
Form: Upper superstructure over a serpentine writing base with leather slide
Carving: Deep relief masks, scrolls, foliage and beaded mouldings throughout
Storage: Array of small drawers to the superstructure, full-length drawer to the base, additional pedestal drawers
Writing surface: Pull-out leather writing slide with gold tooling
Scale: A statement desk that still sits comfortably in a study, library or dressing room
Design & Details:
Ornate cresting: The superstructure is surmounted by an intricately pierced gallery with a central mask cartouche, flanked by scrolling acanthus and rocaille work.
Fitted interior: Multiple small drawers (to left and right) frame a central open compartment—perfect for notebooks, correspondence or a compact laptop.
Serpentine base: The shaped frieze drawer sits above a leather-topped slide, edged with fine gilt tooling; an elegant solution for extending the working surface.
Profuse carving: Carved masks to the stiles, bold acanthus to knees and aprons, and rolled scroll feet; beaded and gadrooned mouldings finish the edges.
Hardware: Turned mahogany knobs (with period patina) and locks
Placement & Styling:
Ideal for a library, study, hall or boutique workspace. Pairs beautifully with a Gainsborough or leather desk chair and sits comfortably alongside Victorian/Edwardian bookcases, Chippendale-inspired seating, or Gothic Revival accents.
