Description
Rare and massive early 19th Century Scottish sterling silver Clan Badge, kilt or plaid brooch, depicting St.Andrew, robed and standing with his right arm holding the cross, his left arm across his breast and he is looking to his left; all is surrounded by a circular garland of thistle heads and leaves. The cross is the old form in that it is higher than it is wider, cast as 2 pieces and assembled by the maker.
The moulding work is superb, the detail is excellent, St. Andrew is depicted with facial features and beard and the garland is so complicated that at first I thought is was a "one off" casting.
The heavy white metal pin, not silver, is the early style usually associated with early 19th C. heavy brooches.
Possibly more suited to a cross belt than to fabric. Marked to the reverse twice with "Rs & S". Not hallmarked, normal for 19th C. Scottish jewellery, but tests as sterling silver (Xrf technology). Cleaned but not polished
A interesting little article about the Saltire is here.
